Social Studies Program Outline:Daniel Ortiz Middle School offers Social Studies in each grade level. In grade 6, students study people and places of the contemporary world. Students also participate in many valuable learning experiences ranging from the use of technology by creating power point presentations, to creating visual images such as making life-size and paper plate people. Learners are encouraged to take part in History web quests and scavenger hunts. Learning about cultural diversity in fun and creative ways is the goal of the teachers of World Culture Studies. Students are encouraged to think critically and gain a global and regional understanding of the world and it’s diverse cultures. In Grade 7, students study the history of Texas from early times to the present. Students take part in learning experiences that relate to the study of Texas and field lessons are often a part of the learning process. Students have the opportunity to participate in the History Fair. The seventh grade teachers place emphasis on broadening their students knowledge of the judicial branch of government by participating in a “Mock Trial”. In Grade 8, students study the history of the United States from the early colonial period through Reconstruction. Learning experiences in which students take part include simulations and a study of current events. Students are encouraged to think creatively and critically. Analyzing primary source documents such as political cartoons and quotes are incorporated in the study of U.S. History. Thought-provoking leaning experiences are utilized to facilitate an awareness of how America came to be what it is today. |
