The science curriculum is integrated and consists of the following topics: life science, earth and space science, chemistry, and physics. The science department also integrates curriculum with the math department through HU-LINC professional development. In addition, each teacher uses HISD objectives and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, which follows the foundation for the required objectives and correlations taught for each grade level.  A syllabus is given to each teacher by the district to ensure continuity of curriculum across the district. The teachers then plan creative, interesting and relative lessons. Labs/hands-on activities account for at least 40% of the curriculum. One assessment tool that our teachers use is projects. Examples of projects are: element balls, element t-shirts, amusement park creations based on physics concepts, portfolios, and of course science fair. All students at Ortiz are encouraged to participate in science fair. The teachers take students on field trips. Some field trips that have taken place include: the University of Houston for Space Day, Space Center Houston for Physics Day, and The Rice School for the American Association of University Women’s Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics.
