Dress Code (Uniform and Apparel Policy)
All students attending Lanier Middle School will be required to wear the Lanier School Uniform as defined in the following policy. All articles of the uniform are to be maintained and worn in a way that represents the individual student and the school in a positive way. All articles of the uniform are to fit properly without cuts, rips, or tears at hems or seams.
Shirts and Sweatshirts:
Shirts and sweatshirts are available for purchase only at Lanier Middle School. There is a uniform store on campus (located in room 136) where shirts and sweatshirts will be available throughout the school year.
The Uniform Store hours are as follows:
Mondays: 7:30 –7:45 for students (7:30 – 8:30 for parents)
Thursdays: 11:45 – 1:45 (students may leave lunch with signed permission).
Shirts typically will be 100% pique cotton polo type available in four colors (red, white, black and purple).

Pre-worn uniform items (if available) may be purchased for $3.00 each.
Shirts and sweatshirts may be worn inside or outside of the pants, skirt, or shorts. If worn outside, shirttails may hang no lower than mid-thigh. Turtleneck shirts are not acceptable to the uniform code.
Club shirts may be worn on the day of an event or competition only. Club/organization shirts must have administrative approval.
Undershirts
Students are permitted to wear white undershirts only. The white undershirts must be plain, but may be long- or short-sleeved. No graphics or lettering can be visible. Students may wear the P.E. tee shirt under their uniform shirts. Turtleneck shirts are not acceptable to the uniform code. Students are not to wear any shirt or T-shirt (including P.E. uniform shirts) slung over the shoulder or covering the Lanier Uniform shirt.
Shorts/Pants/Skirts:
Uniform apparel that meets Lanier's guidelines is available at many department stores including J.C. Penney, Target, Walmart, K-Mart, Fiesta, Sears, Academic Outfitters, Sue Mills and Parker Uniforms Any item purchased must meet the following qualifications:
Pants-
- Pants must be uniform khaki. No wide hems on the pant legs are permitted. The pants shall be cuffed or straight hemmed. The bottom of the pant leg cannot be frayed or split. The bottom of the pant leg cannot drag on the floor.
- Pants must fit appropriately—pants which are too baggy or too tight are not permitted. Pants cannot sag; the inseam cannot hang low. Pants must fit at the waistline.
- Capri pants (hem at mid-ankle) are not permitted.
- Cargo pants (pants with pockets on the side are not permitted.
- Corduroy pants, stretch pants, and khaki jean pants are not permitted.
- The “club” look for girls (very tight pants) and the “baggin” look for guys ( low mid-seam) are not permitted.
- A belt must be worn at all times.
Shorts-
- Shorts must be uniform khaki.
- Shorts shall be cuffed or straight hemmed no more than 3 inches above or below the top of the knee.
- Shorts must fit appropriately—shorts which are too baggy or too tight are not permitted. Shorts cannot sag; inseam cannot hang low. Shorts must fit at waistline.
- Cargo shorts (shorts with pockets on the side) are not permitted.
- Corduroy shorts, stretch shorts, and khaki jean shorts are not permitted.
- Skorts (combination shorts and skirt) are not permitted.
- The “club” look for girls (very tight pants) and the “baggin” look for guys ( low mid-seam) are not permitted.
- A belt must be worn at all times.
Skirts-
- Skirts must be uniform khaki.
- Skirts must be completely pleated from the top to the bottom of the skirt, and the pleats must go all the way around the skirt.
- Skorts are not permitted.
- Skirts must be no shorter than 3 inches above the top of the knee or no longer than 3 inches below the knee.
- Skirts must fit appropriately at the waist and may not be fitted tight.
- The waistband on the skirt must not be rolled up.
Head Coverings
- Hats, do rags, scarves, hairnets, bandanas and other headgear that is deemed to be a distraction to the learning environment are NOT permitted to be worn in the building.
- Headbands may be worn in the building if their purpose is to hold the hair in place and they do not distract from instruction
RECOMMENDATION:
When you buy articles of clothing, make allowance for the fact that you are going to grow during the school year. In other words, purchase garments that have ample material in the hem to allow for alterations through the year. By doing so, you will stay in compliance with the dress code.
COATS AND JACKETS
Students may wear coats, jackets, and sweaters into the building on cold days but they must be placed in lockers upon arrival. A Lanier sweatshirt is available for purchase and satisfies the requirements of the dress code. You may also wear a long-sleeve tee shirt--solid white only.
HOSIERY AND TIGHTS
Hosiery, if worn, must cover the entire leg. No footless leggings are allowed.
SHOES
Shoes must allow for SAFE movement throughout the building, including the stairs.
• Shoelaces must be tied.
• High-heeled shoes, flip flops, house shoes/slippers, and platform shoes and backless shoes are not permitted.
MAKE-UP, BODY PIERCINGS, HAIR COLOR, HEAVY CHAINS
Your appearance must not be such a distraction that it interferes with the educational process.
Consequently, excessive makeup, body piercing other than appropriate earrings, and hair color other than a natural shade, are not permitted. Excessive bracelets and bracelets with metal spikes are not permitted. Tattoos must not be visible. Heavy chains and dog collars are not permitted.
CLUB/ORGANIZATION SHIRTS
Club/organization shirts may be worn on the day of the event or competition only. Club shirts must have administrative approval.
ADMINISTRATIVE DISCRETION
The administrators will determine if any issue related to student dress, including one not listed
above, is a violation of the student dress code. We encourage you to make wise choices!
P.E. UNIFORMS
Uniforms are available through the P.E. teachers. Students must wear the official P.E. uniform. P.E.
uniform shirts may be worn as undershirts. However, the P.E. uniform is to be worn only in PE. class.
During cold weather, students may wear sweatpants and the Lanier uniform shirt with permission from the P.E. teacher. Jackets and coats are not permitted.
Consequences
Failure to comply with the uniform dress code will result in disciplinary action. The consequences for not meeting the expectations are as follows:
- First offense is a referral to the grade level administrator and phone contact with the parent. The parent will be required to bring appropriate garments before the student may return to class.
- Second offense requires the student to be assigned a one-day suspension in the ISSC. (Parent will be notified at least one instructional day in advance.)
- Third offense will result in a four-hour Saturday detention.
- Fourth offense will result in a two-day suspension at home.
- Subsequent violations will result in a three-day alternative school placement.
