Follow these simple
instructions! You need to fill in a Magnet Application
which can be obtained at Hogg or found
here.
Once you fill it in, you send it to:

Be sure to include with your completed application a copy of the following
documents:
1. Last year's and this year's report card.
2. Last year's TAKS and Stanford test results.
3. Proof of address.
4. Record of vaccinations.
HISD's Magnet Office will publish the dates for application deadlines as
well as
notification date. These dates will appear in the press as well as
here.

MIDDLE SCHOOL IS A LEADER IN ROBOTICS EDUCATION IN THE NATION!

This just in! ~ Hogg
Middle School's Math, Science, and Technology Magnet Program
promotes
teamwork, encourages problem solving, and participates in
Robotics competitions to extraordinary
success. Students in Hogg's Magnet program get to build robots
using Lego Mindstorms in a
dedicated laboratory that has all the tools and equipment needed
to prepare for the FIRST
Lego League Tournament. They get to participate in BEST Robotics
Tournament and also build
a robot from scratch in order to participate in FIRST, learning
how to use power tools in the

UNLEASHED AT IMPACT II
HISD's Impact II
Inventors and Robotics Competition was held at the Hattie
Mae White
Educational Support Center last January 31, 2008. Hogg
Middle School's Robotics was present
and accounted for in a big way. Our students came ready to
compete and they emerged
victorious!
In the Robotics
Category, our future Robotics Engineers earned:

PLACE: Rafael Porras, Rafael Hernandez, Everardo Segura,
Erick Contreras,
Alexis Berrera, Zachary Cegielski, Trendall Flowers (8th grade
team)
THIRD
PLACE: Joe Lopez, Jose Jimenez, David Torres, James Swanson,
Brian Salazar,
Christian Sturgis (6th and 7th grade team)
In the ORIGINAL
GAME INVENTION category, the results were:

PLACE: Brandon Duana and Juan Martinez (8th grade)
SECOND
PLACE: Hector Alvarez and Aaron Berumen (8th grade)

SCHOOL ROBOTICS
None of this would
be possible without the hard work and dedication of Hogg's
Robotics teacher,
Mr. Juan Salinas. He has had the invaluable
assistance of Hogg's teachers Ms. Michele Williams
and Ms. Ashley Farrell in preparing the students
for this competition. And let's not forget our P4L
Coordinator, Mrs. Letti Partida, who has always been 100%
there for Hogg Robotics!

| SCIENCE
IS A FAVORITE AT HOGG
|
Magnet students at Hogg Middle School
enjoy the use of 6 science laboratories
to do their experiments during class. There are science electives as well,
such as
Science Olympiad and a new Bio-engineering class which has been developed
by Rice University. Hogg also has a greenhouse, a butterfly garden, and 32
planting plots. Science teachers are dedicated to make LEARNING FUN! |

HOGG MIDDLE
SCHOOL 7th GRADER WINS SCIENCE AWARD
Our very own Jose Jimenez, First place winner in Chemistry at
the Central Region Science Fair, has just been named a National
Finalist in the International Energy Science Fair which will be
held at the George R. Brown convention Center May 1-5, 2008. His
project, "The Eerie Glow of Luminol" is about bioluminescence and
chemiluminescence. You can check out the science fair at

Jose has also
been invited by the People to People Organization to travel to the
nation's capital next year. Once there, he will visit museums and
national monuments as he participates in the World Leadership
Forum for eight graders. Check out their website at

FIVE OF FIVE CHOSEN FROM HOGG TO
PARTICIPATE IN GEOFORCE
Hogg Middle School
science students have demonstrated their excellence one more
time. Fire of our eighth graders submitted their applications
to be selected as GeoFORCE participants for this summer and
all through high school. They are: Aaron Berumen, Denise
Castillo, Angelina Castillo, Hector Alvarez, and Lorena Tejeda.
These students will participate in the summer program this
year where they will visit the University of Texas in Austin
and from there on to Washington, D.C. Congratulations to the
winners!

RESULTS ARE IN FOR THE SCIENCE FAIR!
The Central Region had its annual Science Fair on
February 12, 2008 at the Cooley Center on
17th Street. Hogg Middle School sent nine representatives:
Megan Foster, Raul Lopez, Chris Owen,
Samuel Soto, Jessy Enriquez,
Gerardo Flores, Jose Jimenez, Quetzal
Porras, and Gabby Moron.
Our team
earned the following medals:

| WHAT
ABOUT
MATHEMATICS???
|
Magnet students at
Hogg Middle School may have Pre-Advanced Placement mathematics
classes beginning in 6th grade. This way they man qualify to take Algebra,
a class for
High School credit, while in 8th grade.
Magnet students also
participate in Rainbow Challenge every year with excellent success.
This year's competition was held at Black Middle School on November 17,
2007. Our
team did exceedingly well!

MATH RULES AT HOGG MIDDLE SCHOOL!
Hogg
Middle School has several technology-based math programs in place to
help our students excel in mathematics. Some of these are APANGEA
Learning and Carnegie Learning. We have math every day for students
who need it as well as offer tutorials in the morning and after
school. For accelerated students, we have a brand-new program called
Reasoning Mind which will prepare our Vanguard, Magnet, and Pre-AP
students for Algebra and beyond. We're excited with what's going on
with Math at Hogg!!! |

SECOND TO NONE IN HISD!

Pre-Advanced
Placement classes are offered in every subject and in every grade
by certified
Pre-AP and G/T teachers. All the Magnet electives are available to our
Vanguard students.
Vanguard students may also be Magnet students.
To be part of Hogg's Neighborhood Vanguard Program, you need to fill out
the application
and submit the documentation specified:
1. last year's report card
2. last year's Stanford scores
3. last year's NNAT scores
4. teacher's recommendation
Your application will be evaluated using the district matrix and you will
be informed of the
result by mail as soon as possible. |
