Project Chrysalis is a charter school developed
in 1995 by two former Teach for America participants, Kelly Garrett and Dennis
Lee. It serves 105 students in grades 6—8 on the campus of Rufus Cage Elementary
School. The name represents the transformation that occurs in children when they
emerge from a nurturing, educational environment.
Kelly Garrett - Co-founder
Mr. Garrett had a vision of hardworking students
who possess the passion and ability to be anything they want. He envisioned a
school of students ready and willing to do anything to succeed, whether staying
after school for tutorials, or helping teachers. He also envisioned fun in
between. Chrysalis has prospered into becoming one of the best schools in Texas.
Dennis Lee - Co-founder
Mr. Dennis Lee attended the University of
Chicago before deciding to join the ranks of Teach for America. As a TFA corps
member, Mr. Lee was placed in Houston, TX where he taught kindergarten for two
years. Dennis and Kelly Garrett joined forces to start a school with the help of
parents and staff at Cage Elementary. The new school was named Project
Chrysalis. Mr. Lee brought to Chrysalis a fine numeric sensibility that made him
a mathematical wizard.
