New Business
8th Grade Activity (Prom):
Mr. Jordan has confirmed the Power Center for the 8th Grade Prom. The date of the Prom will be May 18, 2007. Students, who sold 15 or more candles, will be allowed to attend the prom free. The Power Center will do the catering. The theme for the Prom this year will be The Sky is the Limit. Information to the parents should have been sent home in March. Last year, 2006, the Prom raised $3,000. This year, each student will pay $20 for the prom ticket. The $20 will pay for the following: food, equipment rental, security, maintenance/clean-up, etc. The PTO committee would like to know in advance if you want to be a chaperone. Welch administrators as well as parents need to be present. This is a nice event for the students. The PTO committee will have 200 tickets on sale for the Prom. If more than 200 tickets are needed, let Mr. Jordan know at least a week before and he will provide them. The PTO will sponsor 5 – 8 students for the Prom and H&H Ranch including T-shirts. These student’s names will come from the counselors and will be included in the 200 ticket count. The Prom food will be decided by Mr. Jordan this week. He thinks it will mainly be pick food and large amounts of liquids to drink.
The following parents have agreed to volunteer for Prom Night:
A parent, Mishell Johnson wanted to purchase “voltive” centerpieces for the prom tables. She will check to see what the Power Center has planned before deciding. If we go with the voltive centerpieces, the PTO will give her $100 to make the purchase.
If you would like to be a parent chaperone, contact Carlton Jordan @ 281-723-4692. Parents also need to realize this is a student event. You are welcome to come and watch and not get involved. Parents, as well as the students, should be appropriately dressed and will be asked to leave if not dressed inappropriately.
Pre-AP & AP Courses (Advanced Placement) Program:
Ms. Osuampke was at the PTO meeting and discussed Welch’s Pre-AP and AP Program. She provided parents at the meeting with brochures that gives you detailed information on the AP program. The goal of the Pre-AP program is to prepare your student for high school and give them the option of continuing in the AP track. Pre-AP classes are accelerated and are more challenging than traditional classes. Welch offers Pre-AP English, Pre-AP Science, Pre-AP History classes to all grade levels. Pre-AP Math is offered to 6th and 7th graders only at this time. Welch is also working to integrate into the program a Pre-AP Accelerated Science track. This track will prepare students for the Pre-AP IPC (Integrated Physics and Chemistry) class. Pre-AP Algebra I, Pre-AP IPC and Pre-AP Spanish are offered as high school credits only to 8th graders. 6th grade students are given a diagnostic test to determine whether he/she can be placed into Pre-AP classes. 7th and 8th grade students Math and Language Arts grades from the previous year are used to determine their acceptance into the Pre-AP program. She mentioned that the Advanced Placement Programs raise expectations for high school and college. Students can take advanced tests and if they pass, they don’t have to take them in college. The goal is to get three high school credits from Welch before college. Ms. Osuampke mentioned a website where parents can go to get all of this information (www.collegeboard.com/apstudents). If you want a copy of the brochures or need additional information, please call Ms. Osuampke at the school at 713-778-3300.
Test Scores:
TAKS test scores have not been released to the campus. Teachers have not even received the scores. Within the next week or so the entire campus will be notified. If TAKS core courses are not passed, you will have to attend summer school. If TAKS not passed in summer school, student will be retained.
School Uniforms:
A parent wanted to know what criteria is placed on skirt uniforms for the school in terms of inches. Is it the standard finger-tip test? Is it in the student handbook? Verbal comments have been made to her children on their skirts. She wanted to know before the start of next school year. Other parents wanted to know why can’t the students wear jeans or wear jeans on Fridays. Ms. Iyamu mentioned that dress code decisions are not made haphazardly, but that there is a Dress Code Committee at Welch that makes these decisions. She also mentioned that Ms. Andrews will address any concerns a parent has with the dress code and that nothing is etched in stone. Parents need to make an appointment with the front office and let them know your concern so that Ms. Andrews can have the proper information. Mr. Jordan mentioned that parents need to get involved with the dress code committee if they are unsatisfied with the dress code. He also mentioned that dress code decisions are made by the committee and no explanations are given to the parents as to why the dress code is sometimes modified. Ms. Perry mentioned that she want to be a part of the Dress Code Committee and will check into becoming a member.
Graduation (Awards Ceremony) Start Time:
Mr. Jordan had a concern with the Graduation/Awards Ceremony time being at 2:00 p.m. He mentioned that most parents are working at this time and parents were not involved with this decision
Absentee Reporting Time:
A parent wanted to know if her child comes in after 10:00 a.m. with a doctor’s excuse will they be considered absent? Ms Iyamu mentioned that the Attendance Clerk, Ms. Flores, will go in and change the absence to excused if the child has a note. The 10:00 a.m. time was established by the District and is a standard time.
Election of Officers:
Nominations for PTO officers for next year was requested. The positions available: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Lisa Adams, Treasurer, will retain her positions. There were no other nominations or volunteers for the remaining positions. Mr. Jordan mentioned that he would come back and re-visit next school year when the next president is elected. His last day as serving as President of PTO will be May 31, 2007. The PTO need to meet over the summer. Carlton mentioned that he is available via phone. Ms. Chung also mentioned that she would be available in assisting with the meeting.
Note: If you are interested in any of the remaining positions, please contact Carlton Jordan @ 281-723-4692.
PTO By-Laws:
A copy of the PTO By-Laws were provided by Emanuel Guidry and handed out to members present at the PTO meeting. This copy has a revision date of 1/15/98 (see attached).

Old Business
Teacher Appreciation Breakfast:
The Teacher Appreciation Breakfast was held on Wednesday, February 28 and was a success. It was held on the teacher’s first day of testing and the PTO committee provided teachers with a Continental Breakfast held in the Library to start their day. Ms. Aguirre (a school employee) catered the event.
8th Grade Week:
The 8th Grade Week will be held again this year. The 8th Grade Community will decide the date. Last year “Twin Day” was abused and will be re-visited this year. Students must wear appropriate dress. If there is a disruption, this event will be cancelled.
Ice Cream Social:
An ice-cream social has been planned for 5/22/07 at 2:00 p.m.. There will be hotdogs and Scrapbook signings. This idea came from the Journalism teacher. It’s inexpensive and will be targeted towards the 8th graders. Group photos taken in February will be included in the scrapbook. The school will provide hotdogs with ice cream provided by PTO. NTA photography will provide CD for the photographs. Volunteers are needed for this event. Please contact the school if you are available to help. Carlton Jordan is asking the art teachers to make stars for this event.
New Business
Election of Officers:
On the final PTO meeting, May 8, 2007, the PTO committee will both solicit nominations and elect officers for next school year. Carlton Jordan will also visit elementary schools PTO meetings (Elrod, Kate Bell, Gross, Valley West, Milne, Tinsley, etc) to solicit new members. Everyone is asked to be present for this very important meeting.
The Sky is the Limit Scrapbook:
“The Sky is the Limit Scrapbook” was created in-house by the school’s Journalism Class and will be available for sale on April 23 in front of the cafeteria. The cost of the scrapbook is $10.00. It includes photos of all the clubs and athletic teams in the school. The Journalism Class purchased the equipment to make the scrapbook and can produce as many copies as needed. Students can purchase the scrapbook for signings at the Ice-Cream Social on May 22.
Last year, 175 students attended the prom and Dr. Rod Paige dropped in for a short visit. Welch has approximately 400 8th grade students this year and half are expected to attend. However, students must have a certain behavior standard in order to be able to attend. The Prom ends up paying for itself and also allows for a carry-over cushion for next years PTO beginning operations.
Decisions still to be made:
Carlton Jordan to meet with Kenneth Benjamin, Power Center, to decide chair covers – blue is preferred – round tables. Red carpet is nice but too pricey. Menu (will be doing a phone conference) – in past experience, students do not eat a lot and a lot of food left over. If 200 students, feed 150 to prevent this from happening. Students are constantly drinking. Need to make sure sodas are always available. Maybe have Nachos on the menu. Count is expected to be 150-200 students including staff and parents. Carlton Jordan asking the art teacher, Lambourn, to make stars to hang from the ceiling for the prom. He is also checking with Ms. Lambourn for other ideas: keepsake (tote bags), prize drawings (best dressed, first to arrive, day planner, etc.,). He is also asking NTA photography to do stars and “the sky is the limit” background for the pictures. Carlton is also checking on banner that says Welch Middle School “the sky is the limit” – Class of 2007. Mishell Johnson wanted to know on the day of the prom, how soon can we come in and decorate? Ms. Johnson and Ms. Chung are also deciding on what type centerpiece will be used. Confetti and flowers to be placed in the middle of every table. Carlton is checking with Osuamkpe on donations for the prom.
For more detailed information, see attached flyer that will be distributed to the 8th grade students.
Dresses for Prom:
Some Welch students may not have enough money to purchase dresses for the prom. Last year, some teachers and parents donated dresses. The school and PTO will work with families who cannot afford to purchase one. The counselor will notify the school and PTO of these students. Also, Ms. Andrews will be checking with Ms. Enriques for her assistance in this matter.
Whatever Happened to Track Plans?:
A questions was raised by a parent “what happened to the track plans?” Per Carlton Jordan, not enough money was raised this year for the track.
Honor Roll Probation:
A parent wanted to know “How are students placed on probation for the National Jr. Honor Society?” Ms. Andrews is checking into this.
College Night:
College night is planned for Welch on May 3, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Different colleges will be at the school to talk to students about future college plans.
Wal-Mart Gift Card Donation:
The PTO has been asked to provide a gift card to a student in need. The PTO agreed to provide a $75 Wal-Mart gift card to the student providing that a counselor goes with the student to make the purchase and permission is given from the parent.
The Whiz:
A production of the WHIZ will be performed by the Welch’s Theater Arts Department on April 26th at 7:00 in the school auditorium. Everyone is invited to come out and help support the students on this event.
PTO Donation to School (2006-2007):
Each year, the PTO does something for the school. Ms. Andrews mentioned that the PTO could help with the landscaping of the school by providing mulch to the front flowerbeds near the entrance. The district will do the weed pulling. The PTO president agreed to sponsor this service. Approximate cost is $200.00. Ms. Andrews is checking into this.

PTO Joint Meeting:
Carlton Jordan, PTO President, was absent from last meeting on January 9th because he was attending a district-wide joint PTO meeting in which various schools were represented. At this meeting, he obtained valuable information as it relates to the school district. Schools in the Westbury feeder pattern are trying to change their image. HISD is trying to offer everything at a student’s home school rather than having the student attend elsewhere. Scott VanBeck, Regional Superintendent, HISD-West Region, gave very insightful remarks as to where the school district is heading and administrators being able to cope with the challenges.
Teacher Appreciation Breakfast:
The Teacher Appreciation Breakfast has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 28. This will be the teacher’s first day of testing and the PTO committee will provide them with a Continental Breakfast held in the Library to start their day. This will be a way of thanking all the teachers and staff for getting the students ready for testing. Per Ms. R. Andrews, coffee will be provided by the school. The PTO will provide the juices. The PTO will also award a $100 American Express Gift Certificate to the “teacher of the year.” However, this process is still in the nomination stage. Ms. Andrews is checking with Ms. Aguirre (a school employee) to see if she is available to cater the event with breakfast tacos and fixings. Ms. Andrews thinks the total participants will be about (120). This total includes the custodial staff. Ms. Andrews will update Mr. Jordan once she talks with Ms. Aguirre.
On the next PTO meeting, March 13, a theme for the Prom will have to be decided and information to the parents will have to be sent in early March. Last year, 2006, the Prom raised $3,000. This year, each student will pay $20 for the prom ticket. The $20 will pay for the following: food, equipment rental, security, maintenance/clean-up, etc. The PTO committee would like to know in advance if you want to be a chaperone. The 8th Grade Week will be held again this year. The 8th Grade Committee will decide the date. Last year “Twin Day” was abused and will be re-visited this year. Students must wear appropriate dress. If there is a disruption, this event will be cancelled.
Ice Cream Social:
An ice-cream social has been planned for 5/22/07. Welch will attempt to sponsor a Scrapbook signing to be included at the 8th Grade Luncheon. This idea came from the Journalism teacher. It’s inexpensive and can be targeted towards the 8th graders. Group photos taken two weeks ago will be included in the scrapbook. The school will provide hotdogs. The PTO will provide ice cream. NTA photography will provide a CD for the photographs. More detailed information to come at a later date.
