W. I. Stevenson

William Irving Stevenson was born and reared in Cooper, Texas. Following his graduation from Texas Christian University, he embarked on a career of outstanding service to public education and to Houston's historic east end that was to extend over half a century.
In 1925 he was named principal of the newly opened Milby High School, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1960. Milby, one of the largest high schools in the state, still adheres to the exceptional scholastic and civic standards that Stevenson established over 70 years ago.
Stevenson also served as secretary of the Texas Association of Secondary Schools, as president of Houston Administrators, and in leading positions with many other organizations. He was a guiding force behind the Harrisburg Rotary Club, which honored his memory by designating its high school scholarship program the "W. I. Stevenson Memorial Scholarship Fund."
In addition, he was a devoted husband during 68 years of marriage and a proud father and grandfather. He and his family were dedicated members of the Magnolia Christian Church, in which W. I. Stevenson was an elder and lay reader.
The Houston Independent School District takes pride in having one of its campuses bear the name of this remarkable community leader.
