Remodel Job |
Purpose: To use math in
an everyday situation.
Objective: The student
will calculate the area of the walls, ceiling, and floor and then
determine the quantity of paint or covering needed and the cost
of these items.
Materials:
- House plan from the newspaper
- Dimension worksheet
- Spreadsheet software
- Price brochures from a supply(carpet, flooring, and
paint)store
Procedure:
- With your partner decide who is going to
do which rooms. Each person must do 3 rooms.
- Complete the worksheet by entering the dimensions of the rooms assign
to you.
- Copy this to a spreadsheet .
- Use the price brochures to determine a
price for the paint, flooring or carpet. (Be careful-the
dimensions on the worksheet are in feet--carpet and
flooring may be sold by the square yard.- convert the
units if necessary.)
- Calculate the amount of paint needed and the cost of the
paint needed for each room. (Standard--1 gallon covers
400 square feet)
- Calculate the amount of flooring/carpet needed and the
cost of floor covering needed for each room.
- Find the total cost of redoing these three rooms.
- Save your spreadsheet as "Remodel".
