The Revere Math-Science Magnet, one of HISD's
most successful magnet school-within-a-school programs, attracts
students in grades 6, 7, and 8, with a strong interest in doing
academically advanced work in math and science. The magnet school
offers electives, clubs, and activites to meet students'
individual needs and interests. Enrichment instruction is
available in specialty areas such as exploratory science,
exploratory math, fine-arts, and physical development.
Students study the history of flight. They design, build, and fly aerospace vehicles, including gliders, hot air balloons, and rockets. They apply to become Revere astronauts. Through simulation exercises Revere astronauts role play specific jobs in space while flying in the Revere shuttle simulator. Shuttle missions are flown throughout the year.
Exploratory Science
Students explore the world of the science through the use of
computers. some of the topics explored are Chemicals in Food,
Atmospheric Conditions, and Jason Explorations. They create
possible solutions for current issues. Using computer graphic,
they collect, graph, and analyze data. Emphasis is on aquatic
science.
Students develop creative thinking skills by working in teams of seven to solve one of five long term problems. The teams learn how to solve spontaneous problems by creating multiple answers in a limited amount of time. OM Teams present long term solutions to judges who look for creative ideas in costuming, skit presentations, engineering skills and team member interactions.
