Promotion Standards for HISD Students in Grades 6 through 8. 

Students must meet the standards in each subject to earn promotion to the next grade. Those who fail to meet the standards will be required to attend summer school, and if the standards aren't met in summer school the students will be retained in their current grade the following year:


 Sixth Grade

  • Earn a passing score on the reading and mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)
  • Maintain at least a 70 average in course grades in three of the four core courses: language arts (average of reading and English), mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • Score at least at grade level 4.1 on the Stanford 10 Achievement Test or the Aprenda.


Seventh Grade

  • Earn a passing score on the reading and mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)
  • Maintain at least a 70 average in course grades in three of the four core courses: language arts (average of reading and English), mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • Score at least at grade level 5.1 on the Stanford 10 Achievement Test or the Aprenda.


Eighth Grade

  • Earn a passing score on the reading and mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)
  • Maintain at least a 70 average in course grades in three of the four core courses: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • Score at least at grade level 6.1 on the Stanford 10 Achievement Test or the Aprenda .
