About Sidney Lanier Middle School
Lanier Junior High first opened its doors in 1926. It was one of several schools built for the newly-formed Houston Independent School District. It became a middle school in the early 1980's. The "Purple Pup" became the school mascot in 1927 and remains so to this day.
The school was named in honor of Sidney Lanier (1842-1881), a southern poet, musician, lawyer and soldier.
