"Virtues are acquired through endeavor,
which rests wholly upon yourself."
-Sidney Lanier

Lanier Junior High first opened its doors in 1926. It was one of several schools built for the
newly-formed Houston Independent School District.  It became a middle school in the
early 1980's.  The "Purple Pup" became the school mascot in 1927 and remains so to this day.

The school was named in honor of Sidney Lanier, a southern poet, musician, lawyer and soldier.
