Outlines organize
information for research papers, reports, and speeches. They can
also organize notes from your reading, especially text books, and
help as a study guide. |
 |
There are
two (2) types of outlines:
Topic - uses words or phrases and good as a preliminary or review (study)
outline
Sentence - uses complete sentences and good as a final outline and where
more information is needed |

 |
All outlines have a
title that is centered on the page. |
 |
Roman numerals are the
main topics. (I., II., III., IV.) |
 |
Main topics tell the
main idea and begins with a capital letter. |
 |
Capital letters and
Arabic numerals are used for the subtopics and details. (A., B., C., 1., 2., 3.) |
 |
Subtopics give more
information about main topics and begin with a capital letter. |
 |
Details give more
information about a subtopic, begin with a capital letter, and can
be a word,
phrase, or a complete sentence. |
 |
If needed, small
letters are used after the Arabic numerals. (a., b., c.) |
 |
Subtopics and details are indented
and can never stand alone. If there is an A., there must be a B. |
