History
Patrick
Henry Middle School is located at 10702 East Hardy in Houston, Texas. Our
principal is Ms. Cindy Banda, assistant principals are Christian Sanders
and Maria Garcia. Genard Spencer also helps with discipline. The school's
enrollment is 1,100 students and 70 teachers. Our school is part of the
North Central District of the Houston Independent School District.
Grades
6th through 8th attend our school. We have block scheduling, yielding 4
classes per day of 100 minutes each. Students attend 1st through 4th
period on red days and periods 5th through 8th on blue days. Students are
required to wear uniforms which consist of a white or navy shirt and navy
or khaki pants.
In
1964, construction on Patrick Henry Junior High began at the corner of
East Hardy and Little York. It was named Patrick Henry, hero of the
American Revolution. The new school opened to students in January of 1965.
Until December 2003, only one teacher, Mr. Victor Dusek had been at
Patrick Henry since it opened.
Patrick
Henry’s first principal, T. C. Harrell was responsible for the school
colors (Red, White, Columbia Blue) and the mascot (the Patriot). After Mr.
Harrell, W. C. Hollingshead became principal
in 1969. He was replaced in
1972 by C. P. Bell who remained principal until 1988. In that year, M. E.
Thornton became principal. She left in 1994, and M. Tobola, took over. In
1996, we received a new principal, B. Carmona. He left during the year in
1997. Ms. Cindy Banda served as principal from 1997 until 2007 at which
time Mr. Christian Sanders became principal.
Notable
events in Patrick Henry's history include: 17 years as a junior high
school; 1982 became a middle school, with sixth, seventh, and eighth grade
students attending; 1995 block scheduling was adopted. Patrick Henry has
had a number of notable former students with some going on to become
doctors, teachers, lawyers, law officers, as well as many other notable
professions. Thanks to the efforts of Monique Smith, Terri Burton, and
Christian Sanders, Patrick Henry became a magnet school in 2006 and is
now known as Patrick Henry Middle School and Fine Arts and Media
Education Magnet School. A more in-depth
profile
of the school can be found through the
HISD Connect website.
