Hamilton Middle School is located in the North Central District (The Heights) of Houston Independent School District and serves 1153 students in grades six through eight. The current average daily attendance rate for students is 93%. The mobility rate is 34% and the current annual dropout rate is 2.3%. The student body ethnicity reflects that 86% of the students are Hispanic, 9% are African American, 4% are Caucasian and 1% Asian. Approximately 74% of all students receive free or reduced lunches. Forty-nine (49) percent of the student body is classified "At-Risk," 23% are limited English proficient (LEP), 11% are in special education classes, 22% are classified as Gifted and Talented, and 26% are enrolled in honors classes.There are 65 teachers employed at the school. More than 70% of the faculty members have more than three years of teaching experience, with 50% of this group having more than eleven years of experience. Forty-one (41) percent of the faculty is African American, 10% is Hispanic, and 49% is Caucasian. Approximately 43% of the teachers hold a Master’s degree. The teacher attendance rate is 93%.
The 1996 TAAS administration indicated the following percentages of students meeting minimum expectations:

The 1996 scores reflect an increase in reading from 71% to 73% and in math from 56% to 57% at the seventh grade level. In the eighth grade, the percentage of students meeting minimum expectations in reading dropped from 72% to 64%. Math scores in the eight grade increased from 47% to 49%. A decline in the percentage of students meeting minimum expectations was evident at the sixth grade level with a drop from 71% to 62% in reading and from 56% to 55% in math. Writing scores at the eighth grade level showed a decline from 65% meeting minimum expectations in 1995 to 54% meeting minimum expectations in 1996.

Hamilton Middle school is truly multicultural. In addition to the diverse cultural heritage's of our American students, our English as a Second language (ESL) Program assists students from countries as diverse as Mexico, El Salvador, Jordan, Egypt, Vietnam, Cambodia and Czechoslovakia. We strive to help all of our students learn to function successfully in a world of people from diverse backgrounds. We are, therefore, respectful of cultural heritage of each Hamilton student and staff.

Honors Program

This program is designed to provide able students with a strong academic foundation emphasizing study skills, and written communication. This program is designed to prepare middle school students for the rigorous International Baccalaureate Program in grades 11 and 12, though it will not guarantee acceptance into high school program. Those students who have met Houston Independent School District's criteria for major works will be eligible for Hamilton's honors classes.
