Apprenticeships
Learning-by-doing
works!
Citizen Schools students don't just learn
how to protect environment spaces-they actually build camp site that is
environmentally friendly. They don't just take pictures - they create
photo story that expresses their innermost thoughts and feelings. And they
don't just learn about the internet - they actually repair computers and
then teach their families to use them.
Children come away
with a deep understanding of the subject and with practical skills they
can use for life. Each apprenticeship ends in a Wow-a high-quality product
or performance that allows children to be heroes in their own community.
Our volunteer Citizen
Teachers teach Apprenticeships from the unique textbooks of their lives.
And the results will make you say, Wow!
Some of our
Apprenticeships:
First Aid
Responders
– Emergencies happen everyday: Broken bones, wounds, heart attacks,
respiratory alert, would you know what to do? Students will learn all
about how to respond to emergencies.
Urban Design
– Have you ever wondered who is in charge of designing our public
spaces? Why are parks, water fountains, skateboard parks, running paths,
libraries, and government buildings designed in special ways? Students
will help build a 3D model of a public space and learn what goes into
making these big decisions.
Paws
for Thought
– Welcome the SPCA, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,
as students learn about humane education. Students will find out how to
help animals in our community, gain a greater understanding of animal
care, animal diseases and prevention, conserving our natural resources to
help wildlife and training their pets.
Stock Market Game
– Goldman Sachs will guide students in developing savvy business
skills to compete in a ten-week Internet based stock trading simulation.
They will work in teams using the newspaper and Internet to learn the
basics of investing, research companies and make decisions about how to
invest a hypothetical $100,000. Students will be competing with over
500,000 students across the country.
Sketch Up
– You can design buildings, furniture and even bathroom fixtures
with this unique 3D program. Students will start by designing simple
structures and then move on to more complex ones. They will learn how to
design with given parameters and then submit their final drawings to a
panel of architects. This apprenticeship is taught by the American
Institute of Architects.
