For the first time in its history, Fonville Middle School was rated as Recognized

Houston ISD and the Texas Education Agency announced today that Fonville Middle School  attained recognized status. The state accountability system assigns ratings to every campus and district in the Texas public education system each year. In most cases the system assigns one of four rating labels—ranging from lowest to highest—Academically Unacceptable, Academically Acceptable, Recognized, and Exemplary.

To determine the rating label, the system evaluates indicators of performance, including assessment results on the state standardized assessment instruments as well as longitudinal completion rates and annual dropout rates. Generally, campuses and districts earn ratings by having performance that meets absolute standards or by demonstrating sufficient improvement toward the standard.

In addition to performance by all students, the performance of individual groups of students is held to the rating criteria. The student groups are defined to be the major ethnic groups and the group of students designated as economically disadvantaged. All of the evaluated groups must meet the criteria for a given rating category in order to earn that label.

 “It's no surprise that Fonville Middle School is Recognized this year. The leadership and staff at Fonville have strategically and collaboratively worked toward increasing student achievement,” said North Region Superintendent Cynthia Wilson. “Fonville is a place where every staff member is a lead learner and everybody works relentlessly in an environment that fully promotes college- and career-readiness. This commitment to academic success will surely continue to contribute to excellent results. The leadership demonstrated by the board and the superintendent has created an environment where quality teaching and student learning are our focus and priority and the accountability ratings have followed. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment for Fonville Middle School.”

Fonville Middle School Students participate in
DUKE Talent Identification Program

 During the 2006-2007 school years, twenty-eight 7th grade students from Fonville Middle School were identified to participate in the Duke Talent Identification Program. However, only twelve students chose to participate in this academic program. These students took the Scholastic Aptitude Test on January 26, 2008, at the University of Houston downtown campus: Yesenia Arredondo, Juanita Beltran, Julio Chavarria, Luciano Cortez, Roberto Duenez, Denise Esquivel, Daisy Hernandez, Marshall Hudgens, Sara Jamison, Myrka Martinez, Joanna Reyes, and Donna San Miguel. This is a test normally taken by high school seniors to qualify them for entrance to college. Mrs. Brenda Dwyer, Campus Educational Technologist at Fonville sponsored the group.

The Talent Search is now beginning its twenty-eighth year and is the largest program of its kind in the nation, representing participation from 6,000 junior high and middle schools in the Duke TIP 16-state region. Over 1.5 million students have completed the Talent Search since its inception in 1980. The Talent Search identifies academically talented 7th graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Candidates are identified and invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. Duke TIP then provides the participants with comparative information concerning their academic abilities and resources for unique educational opportunities.

The goal is to assist young people with excellent mathematical or verbal aptitude. Students are provided with information about their abilities and introduced to a network of services and programs. Students are encouraged to enroll for several reasons: We identify our talent based on the DUKE criterion and recommend them for membership in the program. Students are given the option of participation. It is not mandatory. The goals of the program are:

  • To pursue an above-level testing experience, which will provide them with more information about their academic abilities; this information can help teachers, parents, and students plan effectively for the coming high school years;

  • To learn more about their academic abilities and be able to compare the results with other academically able youth;

  • To learn more about educational opportunities and options for the future;

  •  To receive recognition of their outstanding achievements.
