James McMains has been an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at
Burbank MS for the past 5 years. He is a very dedicated and energetic
individual, and truly cares about and connects with his students on a
level that extends far beyond the classroom. Mr. McMains has truly found
his calling in teaching.
James is well-traveled having spent much time in all
regions of Mexico and the U.S.; he has also visited Europe. In addition,
he is fluent in Spanish. Being an avid surfer, the majority of his
travels involve his unending quest for the “perfect wave.”
Prior to his teaching career, James served in the
culinary industry and was a Sous Chef for the upscale Café Annie. He
still loves to cook, but his heart remains with teaching. His commitment
to the students is unparalleled.
Devoid of any form of monetary support, Mr. McMains
started a maverick skateboard club on his own time. He had t-shirts made,
acquired sponsorship from Soundwaves, had two Chronicle write-ups, and had
professional skateboarders visit the campus. Soundwaves has donated
upwards of 50 skateboards since the inception of the skate club for those
students who may not otherwise be able to afford a one. As one can
imagine, the club has generated great interest on campus and the number of
members has increased substantially. The skate club offers the students a
positive outlet during the turbulent adolescent years – not to mention
nurturing the needs of the biggest kid of all – Mr. McMains!
