HISD
is implementing a more comprehensive system of promotion standards for
the middle school. These standards are based on the philosophy that
grades and promotion must be earned and deserved if students are to
continue to succeed as they progress through the education system. The
new standards for promotion will be based on demonstrated achievement
on grades, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), and the
Stanford 10 or APRENDA, a nationally norm-referenced achievement test.
To be promoted from one grade level to the next, a middle school
student (grades 6 through 8) must attain:
A. All students in grades
4-8 must meet current state course-average requirement of a 70 overall average
of all courses and the HISD requirement of a 70 or better grade in reading,
language arts, mathematics, and in either science or social studies in grades 4
and 5 OR an average of 70 or above in three of the four core courses: language
arts (average of reading and English), mathematics, science, and social studies
in grades 6-8.
B. All students in grades 4-8 must earn
a passing score on the reading and mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment
of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).
C. A passing standard on the Standord or APRENDA of at least
4.1 for grade 6
5.1 for grade 7
6.1 for grade 8
As the new promotion standards produce
improved performance results for students entering grades 4-8, the standard
will be raised regularly until all students are required to score no lower
than one grade level below their placement.
