Recently, some students attended the Link-Up conference held on October 11, 2008, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Assistant Principal Thomas Day and I accompanied the F. M. Black Link-Up Student Representatives: Toddarius Davis (7th Grade), Marvin Saines (7th Grade), Shannessa Tharbs (7th Grade), Shataqua Tatum (7th Grade), Dennis Espinoza (6th Grade), & Georgette Rivera (6th Grade). Link-Up is a collaborative program between HISD, Girl Scouts of America, 4-H, and the YMCA. It's open to students, parents, and all community members and was organized to assist in the implementation of positive programs throughout the City of Houston and to increase pride, participation, and a partnership between HISD schools and their surrounding community. by: Elizabeth Smith, Science Teacher 6th Grade

Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program F. M. Black’s Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program serves students identified as potentially gifted or talented in intellectual ability, creativity, or leadership. These students typically study interdisciplinary units emphasizing higher-level thinking, problem solving, and creativity. Our G/T Program also provides a differentiated curriculum to students by modifying the depth, complexity, and pacing of the regular academic curriculum. Students must qualify for placement in the Gifted and Talented program through a process of referral and testing. Applications for G/T testing are accepted both early fall and late winter of each academic school year. For further information, or to obtain an application, please contact us at (713) 613-2505. Pre-Advanced Placement Program The Pre-AP program is for identified gifted an talented students as well as for high-achieving students who qualify for this program as per HISD guidelines. This program follows an enriched curriculum. Click here to find the Pre-AP Summer Reading List. English as a Second Language Program The English as a Second Language program is designed for students whose primary language is not English. Students are instructed in all facets of the English language with the intent that they move into mainstream academics as quickly as possible. Electives F. M. Black offers the following elective courses: Art, Dance, Spanish, Karate and Broadcast Journalism. Students may also be selected to be an office worker.
